What I’m Working On…

Just a quick update on what I’m working on.

The fourth book of the Road Series, Road to Reason, was released just this week.   But fear not, you haven’t seen the end of those characters!! Nope, because in Road to Reality, you were briefly introduced to the Harper Brothers.  And in Road to Reason, you will learn more about them, especially since their baby sister, Kaitlin, is the heroine of that story.  The Harpers and the Mathews have a childhood connection, so all those characters you loved in the Road Series make appearances in the All Series.

There are three Harper brothers.  Alec and Phil are twins, and then Ben.  Kaitlin is the baby of the group, and all three brothers are very protective of their sister.  Especially Ben, the closest to her in age.

With that being said, the first book of the next series is Ben’s story.  All or Nothing.  Ex Navy SEAL Ben Harper has returned home after the death of his best friend during a mission.  He thinks he has everyone fooled on the turmoil and demons inside of him.  Everyone but Presley James.

Presley James is a nurse in the Pediatric unit at Albany Medical Center, where Ben is now the Director of Security.  She sees right through his smiles and good nature.  Not to mention how hot he is—the testosterone just rolls off, along with his confident swagger. But as much as she’s falling for him and wants to help him, she isn’t willing to let the skeletons out of her own closet.

You will have to wait and see how the two of them manage their way through.

The next book in the Series is All of Me, Phil Harper’s story.  I just completed that draft two weeks ago, but I’ll save a glimpse into that story for another post.

Then comes Alec Harper. I will be starting his book very soon, All the Way.

Stay tuned for updates!

Excerpt for Road to Reason

Road to Reason should be released soon, by the end of the week with any luck.  But until then, here is a little teaser.  This is from the Chapter named Speechless between Ryan Mathews and Kaitlin Harper.

One of the things I love about this book so much—it’s an introduction to the next series about the Harper brothers!  Stay tuned, more on them soon.

Without further ado, here is a little excerpt from Ryan’s POV…as you know, Ryan is a playboy!

She took a deep breath, pausing while she looked at him, a bit of nervousness evident behind her eyes. “Could you stay the night with me?”

A quick surge of heat rushed through his body, but he pushed it back. “The power should be back on soon. I’ll stay until then. If it doesn’t I could stay the night if you want.” He looked around the living room and noticed a few doors down a hall, assuming she had another bedroom. “I could stay on the couch if you don’t have another bed.”

She pursed her lips. “I meant even if the power comes back on.”

He looked at her for a moment and wished she wasn’t a family friend while he nudged the thoughts out of his mind that came with her loaded question.

Then he noted the flush on her face. She must still be afraid, he thought. He would focus on that. It was the least he could do.

As much of a playboy as he was, he was raised right; he would help a friend in need. Even if that friend was extremely sexy and clueless as to what she was asking of him. “Not a problem. The couch looks big enough.”

She grunted. “You don’t have to stay on the couch,” she offered with a grin and a flutter of her eyes.

What was wrong with her? Her words weren’t in sync with the look on her face. She looked scared to death through her smile. And why was she blinking so rapidly? “Oh, you’ve got a guest room. Good, I’m sure the bed will be more comfortable than the couch,” he added politely.

She huffed out a breath, picking at imaginary lint on her leg. “Ah, I mean in my room.”

A punch went straight to his gut, more so when he saw the blush start to creep up her face. She was killing him right now. “You don’t have to give your bed up for me. The couch is fine.” He hoped his voice didn’t sound as strained as it felt.

She groaned, then said with conviction, “No. I mean share my bed with me. I’m asking if you would stay with me tonight. In my bed. With me. Together.”

He was speechless. And for some reason her face was a deep shade of scarlet. If she were anyone else, he would have picked her up and carried her right to her room the first time she asked him to stay the night.

He would love nothing more than to do that now. But he couldn’t. It would be too awkward later on. He didn’t picture her as a one-night-stand type of girl. Even now he could see she was completely embarrassed.

“Ah, I’m not sure it’s a good idea,” he said, hedging. What was he supposed to say? That he would love nothing more than to spend the night in her bed making love to her all night long and into the morning? That he couldn’t wait to peel her out of her suit and get his hands on the luscious curves underneath?

“Why not?” She narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

She wasn’t going to make it easy for him. He saw the change come over her features. He insulted her, and he hadn’t meant to. The least he could do was fix that. “It’s not you. If you were anyone else I wouldn’t hesitate. Believe me when I say that,” he said earnestly.

“What does that mean?” she asked, her eyebrows drawing together in confusion.

Did she not understand the rules? You just didn’t sleep with a friend’s sister because you were attracted to her.

At least he didn’t. Even if she was the one who was coming on to him. “It means that it would be awkward afterward. Our parents are friends. I’m friends with your brothers.” He tried to joke with her, lighten the mood. “I value my life too much if they were to find out.”

“They don’t need to know. I won’t tell them. You won’t, will you?” she asked, urgently.

“There won’t be anything to tell them, because it’s not going to happen,” he stated firmly.

Rounding the Bend

Just a quick update.

Road to Reason is at the proofreaders as I type. My goal is to have the book published no later than mid April.

All or Nothing, my first book in the All Series—Ben Harper’s story—has been though a few edits and is quietly sitting aside while I finish up my first round of edits on All of Me—Phil Harper’s story. Then I’ll go back and play around with Ben’s story some more. I find it’s better to let a story sit for a bit and return to it.

I just scheduled some dates in May for Ben’s story to make its way to the editor. My goal is to have it published around July 1, 2015.  I have to say I’m more than pleased with how Ben’s story evolved, then wrapped up.

My original plan was to have the All Series be three books, Ben, Phil and Alec Harper.  But interestingly enough, another character was introduced in All of Me and I might have just lined myself up for a fourth book somewhere in the future.  It was totally unexpected, but I love when that happens.

Matter of fact, that is how the All Series came about.  While writing Road to Reality, Lucas and Mac were talking about the contractors working on Mac’s house, and I threw in they grew up with Lucas. Then one thing led to another and it was three brothers and their younger sister—The Harper Clan. You will discover that Kaitlin is the heroine in Road to Reason, and the Harper brothers are very protective of their baby sister.

Sometime in May I will probably start drafting All the Way—Alec’s story.  I like to have 1-2 drafts completed before I work on another story.  This allows me to let one sit and stew for a bit while continuing to keep the creative juices flowing.

So there you go, rounding the bend into the spring with lots going on.

As always, I would love a review of any of my books you’ve read.

Road to Reason

Determined, goal-oriented Kaitlin Harper has managed to achieve most everything she has set her sights on, with the exception of one thing. No matter how hard she’s tried, or how much she’s changed, she can’t seem to fulfill the one remaining goal at this point in her life. And now it seems that goal is further out of her reach than ever before.

Attorney Ryan Mathews is a known playboy. Many have tried to tame him, but he’s always managed to slip out of their grasp. Of course there is a reason for everything he does. A reason he has kept a secret from everyone.

Ryan may be the answer to Kaitlin’s problem, but at what cost?

Find Road to Reason on Amazon.

Not the End…

The fourth book in the Road Series, Road to Reason, will be published early to mid April.  Ryan finally gets his chance. All those little teasers of him through the first three books have built up. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

Let me back track a little. When I was writing Road to Reality, Mac’s story, I decided to introduce another family into the mix, the Harpers—old childhood friends of Lucas and Ryan.  It only made sense that their younger sister would be the one to bring Ryan to his knees.

In doing so, a new series started to play around in my head.  The All Series.  You can read more about my up and coming books here.

The first of the new series, All or Nothing, is about Ben.  I’m in the editing stage of that book and it’s my hope to have it out by early June. I’m going out on a limb and saying this is my favorite story of all the books I’ve written so far.  There is something about Ben and his struggle.  I know, I know, I shouldn’t have favorites, but right now, his story touches me deeply.

Just this week I finished the draft of All of Me, which is about Phil.  What I love about this story is it secretly starts in Road to Reason, and then comes crashing together towards the end of All or Nothing.

With any luck, in the next few weeks I might start Alec’s story, All the Way.

As I continue along with the Harper’s, all your favorite characters from the Road Series return. Their lives continue on and you get to see where they are, and how they relate to each other.  In my eyes, it’s all part of the circle of life. You meet and get to know these characters and then see their Happy Ever After, even after their story has ended.

So as you can see, it’s really not the end. But rather the beginning of life long friends, their struggles, their love and their own growth.

Images

In order for me to effectively describe a person or a scene, even the clothing they are wearing, I need to get an image in my mind. I often do a quick search Online, find something that catches my eye, and go from there.

I’m sorry to admit this, but it’s more important for me to get an actual visual of the males (Heroes) in my stories, than the females. Chalk it up to being a chick, I guess.

The main reason I don’t put faces on my covers is because I want people to form a picture in their own minds of what the characters look like. And in saying that, I’m going to ruin any images you’ve formed right now because I’m going to share with you the characters in my mind. Sorry if it clouds your images. Or maybe it will help.

The funny part of this is, two of my characters are celebrities, so when I see their pictures I always want to shout out Lucas or Ryan. But I keep my lips sealed so those around me don’t think I’m nuts.

So here we go. For Lucas, Paul Walker. Not in stature, but in his looks. Look at that boyish grin…is that Lucas or what?

lucas

Jack. Jack was a tough one for me. I don’t know who this model is, but boy do I think of him when I think of Jack. Not overly muscular, but big, solid, built just like Jack. With that serious broody look to him. Hmm yum, as Cori would say.

jack

Mac. Okay, Mac to me is just hot, sexy and sweet, all wrapped up into one. Not so much rough around the edges at all, not like Jack is. So whoever this model is, he hit Mac’s facial features perfectly.

mac3

Ryan. Ladies, you’ve been given glimpses of Ryan as a playboy over the first three books of this series. And yes he is a playboy. Big, athletic, sexy, charming and very aware of himself and how he looks. Ryan is none other than Chris Hemsworth in my eyes.

Now that I’ve got your attention…

How would you like to receive a free electronic copy of my book? You know you would, wouldn’t you?

What’s the catch, you ask?  Well I’m looking for an honest review to be left on Amazon.com. Do you have to leave me a 5 star review? No, absolutely not.  I just want an honest review.  Do I hope you like/love my books? Sure, I do! But again, I want you to be honest.  As an author, it benefits me to know what my readers like or don’t like about a story.

How do you get a copy of my book? I will send you a PDF or a Mobi file for FREE, and all you need to do is move the file to whichever electronic device you read off of.

What are the requirements? It’s pretty easy actually.  I would like to see at least one review (if not more) that you’ve posted for one of my books already on Amazon.  The assumption is, you want to be an ARC reader because you’ve read my books already.

How soon do you need to post the review? Within 3 days of the release date. But don’t worry, I will send out the ARC copy a few weeks prior to the release. That’s right, you get to read it before it’s even released!

Excerpt From…Road to Reality

I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it, Road to Reality is my favorite in the Road Series. Not just because Zoe has a special place in  my heart. You can read about it more on A Piece of My Heart.  But also because Mac, the hero of the story, is pretty much perfect.  I know, I know, there is no such thing as a perfect guy, but hey, it’s my story, so in my mind is he darn close to it.

And Beth, well as a heroine, she is pretty expectational herself.  Shy, awkward and basically clueless. All she ever wanted was to make a better life for herself and Zoe.

Here is an excerpt from the chapter Major Hotness.

She could do this. Or so she tried to convince herself. It was her job. She did it all day long.   Just because she had a crush on him didn’t mean she couldn’t be professional. Even if it meant running her fingers though his hair. Oh man, she needed to get her mind back on track. It was a haircut, nothing more, nothing sensual there. Only she couldn’t seem to convince herself of that.

Once Mac was seated in her chair, a black smock on, this one with a teal embroidered Mitchell’s on the front, she asked, “What can I do for you?”

Ignoring the muffled cough by Mitchell hovering a few feet away in the guise of product inventory, Beth continued to look at Mac’s reflection in the mirror in front of her. She saw his eyebrow rise and fought not to blush at the loaded question she asked. “With your hair. What do you want done?” she said, clarifying her question.

“A trim I guess,” he replied easy enough.

“OK,” she said, pulling a blue comb from the glass jar on her counter. Running her fingers through his hair first, testing the weight and feel of it, she tried to convince herself once again it was just a haircut, for God’s sake. “Feels damp.”

Mitchell’s snort caused her to turn her head sharply and glare at him while he arranged products without skipping a beat.

“I took a quick shower at the end of my shift.”

Trying not to imagine him in the shower was an effort, but she could do it. She hoped. “That makes it easier then. I’ll just spritz it down a bit more.”

Running her hands and the comb through his hair, turning, and angling her head, she tried to decide where she wanted to start on the wavy locks. “You’ve got quite a bit here.”

Mitchell suddenly had a coughing fit behind her and had to excuse himself, Charlotte seemingly joining in.

“Sorry about them. They’re both getting over a cold,” she said, hoping it didn’t sound as stupid to him as it did to her.

“No problem,” he said with a knowing grin.

“So what are we doing here?” she asked again. Flustered, she completely forgot he already had addressed the question.

“Oh, I think you know what we are doing here,” he answered with a wicked gleam in his eye.

Oh boy, she thought, way out of her comfort zone. Pull it together, she scolded herself, pull it together. Choosing to ignore his loaded answer, she picked up her scissors and went to work. “Ever think of trying something new?” she asked, and then regretted it almost immediately as she felt the heat creep back up her neck.

Mac continued to grin at her obvious discomfort. “What did you have in mind?” he asked, seeming to enjoy the banter.

I’m a professional, she reminded herself. “Nothing major, tighten up the sides and back, go a bit shorter on top, maybe. It would be easier, too. You could probably run a towel through it and go. You’ve got enough waves, so it looks like it will fall in place on its own. Want to give it a go?” Crap, she shouldn’t have phrased it that way.

He sent her a look that had her holding her breath, his eyes challenging hers, a sensual smile spreading across his handsome face. “I’m willing to risk it, are you?”

Placing her scissors down, she grabbed the clippers and tentatively smiled back at him. She could play it cool. “Sure.”

A Piece Of My Heart…

Book 3 in the Road Series, Road to Reality, holds a big piece of my  heart.

If you’ve read my blog post Inspirations and My Dog, then you know Roxy is a combination of the two boxers that I’ve owned.

Well in Road to Reality, there is one character that is part of my life in a very special way.  Zoe, the three-year old daughter of Beth.

You see, Zoe is actually largely based on my best friend, Lori’s, daughter, Hailey.  Not all of her, but a good part of her personality is portrayed in the book. Especially the part about playing dress up, and always cuddling into my shoulder/neck when I pick her up.  That is one of my favorite traits! They are so similar in my mind at times, that sometimes I catch myself calling her Zoe rather than Hailey.

My connection to Hailey runs deep. How could it not when I was at the ultrasound appointment when we found out Lori was having girl? Or when I gazed at her big—she was over 10 lbs—wrinkly form in the hospital bassinet right after delivery.

I often refer to Hailey as ‘my baby girl’ when talking about her.  I’ve even gone so far as to joke that Lori and I are Hailey’s parents and her husband really didn’t have much to do with it.  Of course, we know he had a large part in it, so I guess I better say, “Thanks Shane.” But just the same, she will always be my little girl.

Do you want to see a picture of my baby girl? I know you do. So here are two of my favorite pictures, and tell me if you don’t recognize the traits.

DSC_0727        DSC_0142

Hailey is one hundred percent a little girl. She loves to dress up, loves to put clips in her hair, but most of all loves it when I paint her nails for her.

Even this weekend when I was visiting she brought out the nail polish and asked me to redo her nails.

So, Hailey, when you get older, I hope you read this and realize how much your ‘auntie’ loves you!

Excerpt from…Road to Redemption

With Mac’s book, Road to Reality rounding the corner and getting ready for release, I thought I would give you a little excerpt from Road to Redemption—Cori and Jack’s story. You can buy the book here on Amazon.

This is from the chapter titled Snowing

“Hang on, I’ve got you,” Jack said, reaching for Cori when she slipped in the snow making her way to his truck.

“Thanks. That was close,” she said, gazing up at him with a smile.

That was close, he thought to himself. All he needed was to have her fall on her face in front of him. That would be real gentlemanly. He tightened his hand around her arm and guided her over.

When they reached his truck he opened the door for her, then watched when her heeled boot slid on the metal step guard as she attempted to pull herself up. No choice, he had to put his hands on her a bit more. Despite the cold, he felt a surge of heat rush to his face when he placed his hands on her hips and easily lifted her up, then turned her so she could sit down. He hoped he wasn’t actually blushing, or even worse—if she noticed it.

“Sorry you got roped into this,” Cori said twenty minutes later.

“No problem,” he replied stiffly. Then winced at his tone of voice, he wasn’t trying to be rude, but rather was trying to block out all thoughts of his hands on her body.

A few more minutes of silence passed. The roads were pretty slippery and Jack was concentrating heavily, trying to make his way to the Northway that would take them back to Albany. At least he had something else going on in his mind besides her body.

“Talk to me,” she stated simply.

“Why?”

“Why not?”

He didn’t have an answer to that. Or at least not one she would like. He couldn’t very well say that he didn’t know what to say to her, that she made him nervous, just as she had guessed earlier.

“Please? You are making me nervous,” she confessed.

“Sorry. I’ll slow down.”

“Your driving isn’t making me nervous. It’s the silence,” she clarified.

“Huh?”

“I don’t like silence. It makes me nervous.”

“Oh.” Keep your mind on the road, not on her, he reminded himself.

She frowned, tapped her finger on her leg. “Tell me about yourself.”

“Not much to say,” he replied, never taking his eyes off the road.

“Are you an only child?”

“Yes.”

“Me, too.” More silence. “How old are you?” she asked a moment later. He shot her a questioning glance. “What? Men don’t normally care if you ask how old they are. Only women.”

He could feel her eyes on him, so he grudgingly answered, “Thirty-three.”

“I’m twenty-eight. In case you wanted to know,” she added with a grin.

He looked over at her in shock.

“Yeah, I know. The size deceives everyone.” She giggled. “You should have seen my friends all groan in college when I joined them for a night out. The whole group got carded with me around.”

“College?” he asked raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, I went to college. What’s so surprising about that?”

“Nothing. I thought RN was a two-year program.”

She sighed dramatically. “It is. But my parents are teachers and they wanted me to have options later in life. At the time I wanted to do the two-year program, but they talked me into going to college instead. So I ended up with my Bachelor’s in Nursing Sciences.”

He would have to reevaluate that. Nursing school was difficult. He knew that many didn’t make it. But a Bachelor’s in Nursing Sciences was even harder. He would have never thought she would be one to take the difficult road.

“College was a blast, so I’m glad they talked me into it,” she said, intruding on his thoughts. That he could picture. “See, this conversation thing isn’t so hard, is it? Now it’s your turn”

He grunted. She had no clue how hard it was.

She grinned. Not one to give up easily, she asked another question. “So I know you and Ryan went to Duke together and that you didn’t play football. Play any other sports?”

“No.”

She snorted, and then asked, “Do you ever answer a question with more than one word?”

His lips twitched. “Sometimes.”

“I saw that!” She pointed a finger at him in the cab of the truck. “You almost smiled. I know you can do it, you have to want to.”

His lips twitched some more.

She laughed again. “Almost there, Jack.” He caught her looking at him when his eyes crinkled a bit, but never quite made it all the way.

A few minutes passed with only the sound of the windshield wipers on the window when he finally asked, “Why do you care if I smile?”

“I don’t know. I just do. I like helping people. That’s why I went into nursing. Even if it’s just making them smile,” she said with one of her own. “Don’t you like making people smile?”

“Never thought much about it,” he answered honestly.

“Well, I do. And I like making them laugh. Life is better that way. Isn’t it better to be happy than sad? To have fun doing what you need to do to get through life?” She ground her teeth, when he remained silent.

“I can’t give you what you want,” he stated suddenly. There, it was out in the open. Maybe now he could breath a little, and she would understand.

“How do you know what I want?”

“I’m not looking for a girlfriend,” he continued.

“Who said I was asking?”

Maybe he could shock her. “Or a lover.”

“Me neither,” she replied without batting an eye.

“What do you want from me?” He really needed to know. Maybe she was looking for the same thing he was, something casual.

“How about being your friend?” She grinned. “For now.”

Nope, guess not. “I don’t need another friend.”

“Sure you do. Everyone could use another friend,” she stated and reached over, placing her small hand over his large one on the seat.

He sighed. And let her hold onto his hand.
