It’s Not Me…

I’ve been asked where the ideas for my stories come from. Or how I come up with everything I write.  I’m sure lots of authors are asked this question, or something similar.

There really isn’t an easy answer.  Or at least one I can explain so easily.  For me, it just happens. I’ve always had a vivid imagination.  I was one of those kids that talked to myself all the time.  Some will say I still do. Even if I’m not aware of it.  But in actuality, I’m not talking to myself, but rather to the people in my head. Or adventures going on in my head. No, I’m not crazy, really I’m not.  Despite what some of my friends and family may say. Snicker snicker.

Do I take minor things from my real life and incorporate them into my stories? Of course I do. Little things, nothing major.  For example, if you’ve read Road to Redemption, then you know all about Roxy.  And Roxy is really all about a combination of the two boxers I’ve owned.

In Road to RealityZoe is largely based on my best friend’s daughter Hailey.  She was my big inspiration, or like I say, a piece of my heart.  But Zoe isn’t actually Hailey. Not at all.

I will say though, I don’t write about anything really personal or private in my life.  Pleeeeease, would I really write things that go on in my own home that are private? Whether it’s innocent or not? The answer is no! No way.  Everything is just part of the story. Part of what I want that character or who I perceive that character to be.

I have to say, never once have I read any book and thought, “Boy that author has a wild and adventuous life.”  Nope, it never even crosses my mind. I think it’s nothing more than a story. Like a movie. A script. An idea. It doesn’t mean the author did it, or does it, or ever wants to do it. It’s fiction. It’s called entertainment.

And that is what my books are all about.  Entertainment. An escape from reality.  My own reality when I’m writing them. And I hope the reality for those reading them.  I want to entertain you. I want you to read my books and wish you knew these people.  Wish they were your friends or neighbors and you cared about them. That you couldn’t wait to hear about the next big news going on in their lives. Because that is how I feel about them when I’m writing.

So when it comes down to it all, no, it’s not me in these books. Not at all.

As always, if you would like to find out how to receive free books, just read this post. And of course, you know I love to hear from you and read your feedback!

I’mmmmm Back…..

I guess I haven’t kept my end of the resolutions I made. But I’ve got a good excuse. Some unexpected health problems arose that needed to be taken care of. I’m on the mend and can get back on track.

That being said, I submitted All or Nothing to the editor yesterday for the first round of edits. It’s the first book in my new series, The All Series.  And it’s actually a spinoff of the Road Series.  I could have kept them all the Road Series, but I wanted to change the title and book covers a bit. Besides, how many Road to… can you come up with?  You can read more about the new series on this post.

I just want to thank everyone who has been reading my books and leaving reviews! April was a record month for me with over 1800 books sold, and over 18K downloaded free (in my 5 day special of Road to Redemption) Not bad for publishing my first book only 5 months ago!

I love how much you all get what I’m writing about.  How these characters seem to be part of me and their lives just continue on through each book.    All the characters of the Road Series do make appearances in the All Series.  Hint Hint, there will be some more babies being born!!  And all those men you’ve come to love so much show a bit more of their tender side in fatherhood.  It’s all very sweet.

Once again, if you’ve read one of my books, I would love if you left a review.  It means the world to me to know what the readers like or dislike in some cases. It only helps me become a better writer in the end.

Also, if you would like to know how to get a free copy of my book, check out this post.

Excerpt for Road to Reason

Road to Reason should be released soon, by the end of the week with any luck.  But until then, here is a little teaser.  This is from the Chapter named Speechless between Ryan Mathews and Kaitlin Harper.

One of the things I love about this book so much—it’s an introduction to the next series about the Harper brothers!  Stay tuned, more on them soon.

Without further ado, here is a little excerpt from Ryan’s POV…as you know, Ryan is a playboy!

She took a deep breath, pausing while she looked at him, a bit of nervousness evident behind her eyes. “Could you stay the night with me?”

A quick surge of heat rushed through his body, but he pushed it back. “The power should be back on soon. I’ll stay until then. If it doesn’t I could stay the night if you want.” He looked around the living room and noticed a few doors down a hall, assuming she had another bedroom. “I could stay on the couch if you don’t have another bed.”

She pursed her lips. “I meant even if the power comes back on.”

He looked at her for a moment and wished she wasn’t a family friend while he nudged the thoughts out of his mind that came with her loaded question.

Then he noted the flush on her face. She must still be afraid, he thought. He would focus on that. It was the least he could do.

As much of a playboy as he was, he was raised right; he would help a friend in need. Even if that friend was extremely sexy and clueless as to what she was asking of him. “Not a problem. The couch looks big enough.”

She grunted. “You don’t have to stay on the couch,” she offered with a grin and a flutter of her eyes.

What was wrong with her? Her words weren’t in sync with the look on her face. She looked scared to death through her smile. And why was she blinking so rapidly? “Oh, you’ve got a guest room. Good, I’m sure the bed will be more comfortable than the couch,” he added politely.

She huffed out a breath, picking at imaginary lint on her leg. “Ah, I mean in my room.”

A punch went straight to his gut, more so when he saw the blush start to creep up her face. She was killing him right now. “You don’t have to give your bed up for me. The couch is fine.” He hoped his voice didn’t sound as strained as it felt.

She groaned, then said with conviction, “No. I mean share my bed with me. I’m asking if you would stay with me tonight. In my bed. With me. Together.”

He was speechless. And for some reason her face was a deep shade of scarlet. If she were anyone else, he would have picked her up and carried her right to her room the first time she asked him to stay the night.

He would love nothing more than to do that now. But he couldn’t. It would be too awkward later on. He didn’t picture her as a one-night-stand type of girl. Even now he could see she was completely embarrassed.

“Ah, I’m not sure it’s a good idea,” he said, hedging. What was he supposed to say? That he would love nothing more than to spend the night in her bed making love to her all night long and into the morning? That he couldn’t wait to peel her out of her suit and get his hands on the luscious curves underneath?

“Why not?” She narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

She wasn’t going to make it easy for him. He saw the change come over her features. He insulted her, and he hadn’t meant to. The least he could do was fix that. “It’s not you. If you were anyone else I wouldn’t hesitate. Believe me when I say that,” he said earnestly.

“What does that mean?” she asked, her eyebrows drawing together in confusion.

Did she not understand the rules? You just didn’t sleep with a friend’s sister because you were attracted to her.

At least he didn’t. Even if she was the one who was coming on to him. “It means that it would be awkward afterward. Our parents are friends. I’m friends with your brothers.” He tried to joke with her, lighten the mood. “I value my life too much if they were to find out.”

“They don’t need to know. I won’t tell them. You won’t, will you?” she asked, urgently.

“There won’t be anything to tell them, because it’s not going to happen,” he stated firmly.

Rounding the Bend

Just a quick update.

Road to Reason is at the proofreaders as I type. My goal is to have the book published no later than mid April.

All or Nothing, my first book in the All Series—Ben Harper’s story—has been though a few edits and is quietly sitting aside while I finish up my first round of edits on All of Me—Phil Harper’s story. Then I’ll go back and play around with Ben’s story some more. I find it’s better to let a story sit for a bit and return to it.

I just scheduled some dates in May for Ben’s story to make its way to the editor. My goal is to have it published around July 1, 2015.  I have to say I’m more than pleased with how Ben’s story evolved, then wrapped up.

My original plan was to have the All Series be three books, Ben, Phil and Alec Harper.  But interestingly enough, another character was introduced in All of Me and I might have just lined myself up for a fourth book somewhere in the future.  It was totally unexpected, but I love when that happens.

Matter of fact, that is how the All Series came about.  While writing Road to Reality, Lucas and Mac were talking about the contractors working on Mac’s house, and I threw in they grew up with Lucas. Then one thing led to another and it was three brothers and their younger sister—The Harper Clan. You will discover that Kaitlin is the heroine in Road to Reason, and the Harper brothers are very protective of their baby sister.

Sometime in May I will probably start drafting All the Way—Alec’s story.  I like to have 1-2 drafts completed before I work on another story.  This allows me to let one sit and stew for a bit while continuing to keep the creative juices flowing.

So there you go, rounding the bend into the spring with lots going on.

As always, I would love a review of any of my books you’ve read.

Free Books…

Now that I’ve got your attention…

How would you like to receive a free electronic copy of my book? You know you would, wouldn’t you?

What’s the catch, you ask?  Well I’m looking for an honest review to be left on Amazon.com. Do you have to leave me a 5 star review? No, absolutely not.  I just want an honest review.  Do I hope you like/love my books? Sure, I do! But again, I want you to be honest.  As an author, it benefits me to know what my readers like or don’t like about a story.

How do you get a copy of my book? I will send you a PDF or a Mobi file for FREE, and all you need to do is move the file to whichever electronic device you read off of.

What are the requirements? It’s pretty easy actually.  I would like to see at least one review (if not more) that you’ve posted for one of my books already on Amazon.  The assumption is, you want to be an ARC reader because you’ve read my books already.

How soon do you need to post the review? Within 3 days of the release date. But don’t worry, I will send out the ARC copy a few weeks prior to the release. That’s right, you get to read it before it’s even released!

If you are interested, or have any questions, please contact me at NatalieAnn815@Gmail.com. And don’t forget, if you haven’t signed up for my newsletter yet, go to my home page and click on the red roses.

Thanks so much!

Excerpt from…Road to Redemption

With Mac’s book, Road to Reality rounding the corner and getting ready for release, I thought I would give you a little excerpt from Road to Redemption—Cori and Jack’s story. You can buy the book here on Amazon.

This is from the chapter titled Snowing

“Hang on, I’ve got you,” Jack said, reaching for Cori when she slipped in the snow making her way to his truck.

“Thanks. That was close,” she said, gazing up at him with a smile.

That was close, he thought to himself. All he needed was to have her fall on her face in front of him. That would be real gentlemanly. He tightened his hand around her arm and guided her over.

When they reached his truck he opened the door for her, then watched when her heeled boot slid on the metal step guard as she attempted to pull herself up. No choice, he had to put his hands on her a bit more. Despite the cold, he felt a surge of heat rush to his face when he placed his hands on her hips and easily lifted her up, then turned her so she could sit down. He hoped he wasn’t actually blushing, or even worse—if she noticed it.

“Sorry you got roped into this,” Cori said twenty minutes later.

“No problem,” he replied stiffly. Then winced at his tone of voice, he wasn’t trying to be rude, but rather was trying to block out all thoughts of his hands on her body.

A few more minutes of silence passed. The roads were pretty slippery and Jack was concentrating heavily, trying to make his way to the Northway that would take them back to Albany. At least he had something else going on in his mind besides her body.

“Talk to me,” she stated simply.

“Why?”

“Why not?”

He didn’t have an answer to that. Or at least not one she would like. He couldn’t very well say that he didn’t know what to say to her, that she made him nervous, just as she had guessed earlier.

“Please? You are making me nervous,” she confessed.

“Sorry. I’ll slow down.”

“Your driving isn’t making me nervous. It’s the silence,” she clarified.

“Huh?”

“I don’t like silence. It makes me nervous.”

“Oh.” Keep your mind on the road, not on her, he reminded himself.

She frowned, tapped her finger on her leg. “Tell me about yourself.”

“Not much to say,” he replied, never taking his eyes off the road.

“Are you an only child?”

“Yes.”

“Me, too.” More silence. “How old are you?” she asked a moment later. He shot her a questioning glance. “What? Men don’t normally care if you ask how old they are. Only women.”

He could feel her eyes on him, so he grudgingly answered, “Thirty-three.”

“I’m twenty-eight. In case you wanted to know,” she added with a grin.

He looked over at her in shock.

“Yeah, I know. The size deceives everyone.” She giggled. “You should have seen my friends all groan in college when I joined them for a night out. The whole group got carded with me around.”

“College?” he asked raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, I went to college. What’s so surprising about that?”

“Nothing. I thought RN was a two-year program.”

She sighed dramatically. “It is. But my parents are teachers and they wanted me to have options later in life. At the time I wanted to do the two-year program, but they talked me into going to college instead. So I ended up with my Bachelor’s in Nursing Sciences.”

He would have to reevaluate that. Nursing school was difficult. He knew that many didn’t make it. But a Bachelor’s in Nursing Sciences was even harder. He would have never thought she would be one to take the difficult road.

“College was a blast, so I’m glad they talked me into it,” she said, intruding on his thoughts. That he could picture. “See, this conversation thing isn’t so hard, is it? Now it’s your turn”

He grunted. She had no clue how hard it was.

She grinned. Not one to give up easily, she asked another question. “So I know you and Ryan went to Duke together and that you didn’t play football. Play any other sports?”

“No.”

She snorted, and then asked, “Do you ever answer a question with more than one word?”

His lips twitched. “Sometimes.”

“I saw that!” She pointed a finger at him in the cab of the truck. “You almost smiled. I know you can do it, you have to want to.”

His lips twitched some more.

She laughed again. “Almost there, Jack.” He caught her looking at him when his eyes crinkled a bit, but never quite made it all the way.

A few minutes passed with only the sound of the windshield wipers on the window when he finally asked, “Why do you care if I smile?”

“I don’t know. I just do. I like helping people. That’s why I went into nursing. Even if it’s just making them smile,” she said with one of her own. “Don’t you like making people smile?”

“Never thought much about it,” he answered honestly.

“Well, I do. And I like making them laugh. Life is better that way. Isn’t it better to be happy than sad? To have fun doing what you need to do to get through life?” She ground her teeth, when he remained silent.

“I can’t give you what you want,” he stated suddenly. There, it was out in the open. Maybe now he could breath a little, and she would understand.

“How do you know what I want?”

“I’m not looking for a girlfriend,” he continued.

“Who said I was asking?”

Maybe he could shock her. “Or a lover.”

“Me neither,” she replied without batting an eye.

“What do you want from me?” He really needed to know. Maybe she was looking for the same thing he was, something casual.

“How about being your friend?” She grinned. “For now.”

Nope, guess not. “I don’t need another friend.”

“Sure you do. Everyone could use another friend,” she stated and reached over, placing her small hand over his large one on the seat.

He sighed. And let her hold onto his hand.

The Last Click

Today is the day. I published my first book.

It seemed like this day would never come. Of course, more recently I was wishing for the time to slow down. Why, you ask? Nerves. And a healthy dose of fear. Fear for my characters. As most authors can attest, my characters are part of me. Born and bred in my mind. They’ve caused me grief, stress, frustration, laughter and tears. I’ve anguished over making them just right. Perfect. Of course no one is perfect, but I tried. They’re my friends, like family to me in my mind. And now I’m sending them out there to the big scary world.

So on batted breath, my mouse anxiously hovered over the button that read ‘save and publish’. I closed my eyes, pushed down on the mouse, that last click, and bam, it was done. Simple as that. It was almost anticlimactic.

And now I introduce you to the Malones, the Mathews and their friends in a 4 book series (The Road Series) starting with Brooke Malone and Lucas Mathews—Road to Recovery. Read a summary here

You can buy the book on Amazon.
